Preventative Health Care and Wellness Exams

Annual exams are critical to establish a relationship with the patient, know their quirks and normal habits, and most importantly detect abnormalities early. Each patient is evaluated as an individual and vaccinated with a customized schedule based on risk.

Comprehensive Parasite Control

Parasite resistance is becoming more prevalent in all species from inappropriate use of anti-parasite medications.  Strategic deworming involves identifying your horse’s natural immunity status and management situation and then using this information to develop a custom deworming plan.

Nutrition Consultations

Whether overweight or underweight, we are happy to review current feed practices and advise appropriate feed plans for different ages and stages of life from broodmares to geriatric patients. Nutrition consultation is also critical in management of certain diseases such as Cushings (PPID), Metabolic Syndrome and gastric ulcers.

Advanced Dentistry

Both routine and advanced dental care are offered using the latest motorized equipment (Powerfloat). All dental exams include a complete oral exam using a full mouth speculum, sedation and pain medication. Performance floats, corrective dentistry, alignments, molar extractions, wolf tooth extractions, and periodontal treatments are all available.

General Medicine

A wide range of medical services are offered including evaluation of colic, diagnosis management of infectious disease, dermatology and neonatal care.  Special field services include IV fluid therapy, foal plasma transfusions, blood transfusions (equine/caprine).  AEVS has established excellent relationships with several board certified specialists for case consultation and referral if needed.

Ophthalmology

From simple ulcers to cancer, many eye problems can be treated on farm.  We use advanced treatment techniques such sub-palpebral lavage systems and infusion pumps to facilitate treatment of the patient.  Commonly treated ocular problems include corneal ulcers, eyelid lacerations, equine recurrent uveitis and cancer of the eye or surrounding structures.

Lameness
Complete lameness exams are conducted with a thorough history, careful observation and examination techiques including palpation,  flexion tests and peri-neural or intra-articular nerve blocks.  Patients are generally examined in a straight line and/or lunged on both hard and soft footing.  Diagnostic imaging is available on -farm with digital x-ray and digital ultrasound.  Treatment plans are created based on the diagnosis but may include, joint injections, exercise/physical therapy plan, shoeing recommendations, and oral medications.

Reproduction

Services include preparation of the mare with ultrasound, uterine culture, uterine biopsy, and estrus cycle manipulation.  Artificial insemination is available with shipped/cooled semen.  Foaling assistance can be arranged.  Embryo collection and shipping services will be offered soon.

Field Surgery

Surgery services include castration, mass removals, laceration repairs, enucleations, cryptorchid castration, neurectomy, abdominal hernia repair and check ligament desmotomy.  Surgeries are performed with the assistance of a trained technician.  All surgical patients receive injectable anesthesia and appropriate pain management. This may include injectable or oral pain medications combined with local anesthestics. A consultation with Dr. Walker can help determine whether your horse requires a surgery that can be performed in on-farm or should be referred to a board certified specialist.

Pre-Purchase Examination

AEVS takes the pre-purchase exam very seriously.  The goal of a pre-purchase exam is not to “pass” or “fail” the horse.  Nor, should it be considered a guarantee of the horses’s future.  However, a pre-purchase exam is a very valuable assessment that should be part of your decision to purchase.  The exam involves an in-depth physical exam of all of the body systems and a lameness exam. The entire exam generally takes about two hours to complete.  Additional diagnostics can be performed upon request (ie, x-rays, Coggins testing, drug testing). A form is used to ensure consistency of the exam. This form is provided to potential buyer for preview.

Small Ruminant and Camelid Services

AEVS offers services to all large animals including goats, llamas and alpacas.  Both individual medical treatments and herd evaluations are offered.  From preventative care and herd health plans, to dystocia management and c-sections, there are many services available.  Feel free to contact the office to inquire of specific testing and services.

Humane Euthanasia

We understand that this may be difficult to discuss. We are very willing to help guide you through decisions, determining quality of life and burial planning in a compassionate and professional manner.
